abstract = "The heterogeneity of land use and land cover in urban areas causes
great spatial variation of the thermal surfaces. The results of
radiometric changes of five thermal channels of ASTER data, with
90 m spatial resolution, made it possible to obtain surface
temperature images for two dates in each of S{\~a}o Paulo and Rio
de Janeiro Metropolitan Regions. Despite the low availability of
data for comparison, the estimated data was compatible with
temperature data registered by automatic weather stations, which
attest the thermal data quality obtained by ASTER. In the large
urban centers studied, S{\~a}o Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, the heat
island did not occur in the classical model. The relief, the
verticalization, the land use and land cover, the urban functions
and spatial distribution of residential, commercial, industrial
and leisure purposes areas, modify the heat island configuration
when the thermal contrasts in the intraurban area are analyzed,
even with the occurrence of cold islands. It was also noticed that
the presence of the heat island is related to the living standards
of urban occupation in different districts or neighborhoods.",
